Then one full go, today — one page drawn, one piece played through, one routine front to back, one chapter aloud. Twelve-year-old you left things in that object — a name in marker, a dried-out pen, a margin note — and there's no knowing what until it's open in your hands.

Buy a carton of the highest-fat cream you can find, pour half a jar, lid on, and shake. For most of ten minutes nothing happens — then it's whipped cream, then one shake later it thuds and splits into a lump of butter sloshing in buttermilk, a turn you cannot picture until it happens in your hands. Salt it, toast something, and eat it while your arms file a complaint.

Take a friend to the market — or text them from the first stall — and let them pick one ingredient: no hints about what you'd planned, no veto on what comes back. Whatever lands in your hand, dinner gets built around it. If it's something neither of you can name, the person selling it knows exactly what to do with it — ask.

Tourists buy postcards of streets exactly as ordinary as yours — the only difference is somebody bothered to frame the shot. Then write it to one specific person, buy an actual stamp, and drop it in a postbox so it lands on their doormat like mail from 1986.

Pick any recipe with yeast in it — a loaf, buns, whatever your oven can handle — and make it from flour up. The middle of this one is an hour of doing absolutely nothing while the dough doubles on its own. Then you bake it, the whole place smells like a bakery, and you eat the evidence for the price of a bag of flour.

Somewhere in your home a thing has been broken so long it's basically furniture — the handle that needs two turns, the hinge that announces you, the button hanging by a thread. Today it gets fixed. Take the before photo, carry the problem to a hardware counter, ask the person there what they'd actually use, then do the repair. The fix is usually a forty-cent screw, which is its own kind of insult.

Before you put shoes on, draw your block and the three streets around it from memory — every shop, every corner, whatever sits between the bakery and the barber. Then walk the exact route with a different-colour pen and correct the map wherever the street disagrees with you. There will be corrections. Bring the marked-up map home as the receipt.
